Despite what some people may think, gum disease is quite serious if not taken care of. With over 80% of the population living with some form of gum disease, chances are you could be suffering from it and may not be aware. If left untreated, gum disease can affect different parts of your body, possibly resulting in bone loss, heart disease, stroke, and many other serious situations. Thankfully, Dr. Michael Kirk and Dr. Adam Cohlmia are able to tackle your gum disease with gum disease therapy.
A couple of the ways we treat gum disease non-surgically is scaling. Scaling removes the tartar, also known as calculus, from below the gum line. We may also do a laser treatment, which attacks only the affected gum tissue, while also promoting healthy gum tissue to grow and attach to your teeth. Root planing is another way of helping halt gum disease, as it lessens the rough areas on your teeth’s roots.
There are things you can do at home to prevent gum disease. Flossing and brushing your teeth twice daily, preferably after every meal, is a wonderful way to eliminate the bacteria from sitting in your mouth. Also, investing in an antibacterial mouthwash is a great way to erase the bacteria your tooth brush may have missed. If you cannot brush your teeth after every meal, chewing gum is a great option, as it catches food particles, not allowing them to make your gums their new home.
