In a world that’s producing more dentists than at any other time in history, how does one make themselves stand out? As a patient, if you Google “dentist” right now, you’ll likely get thousands of results. So, what can a dentist do that will make you choose to visit them as opposed to someone else? In Dr. Krysten Jackson’s case, she chose to distinguish herself in two distinct ways—the unique quality of her training and the level of technology she uses. To find out what makes her “not your average dentist,” keep reading!
A World-Class Education
After graduating from dental school, dentists have to go through a residency program in order to apply their newly learned skills in a real-world setting. Just like dental schools themselves, not all residencies are created equal when it comes to their effectiveness and standing within the dental community.
Fortunately for Dr. Jackson, the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry (where she earned her DDS degree) is also home to one of the most elite AEGD (Advanced Education in General Dentistry) programs in the country.
The AEGD she attended was 12 months long and extremely competitive to get into, even for students who went to dental school at OU. During the residency, Dr. Jackson gained valuable experience caring for all types of patients, including ones with complex medical situations and special needs. This enabled her to learn, among other things, the skills necessary to perform complicated restorative and implant dentistry. In addition to enhancing her clinical abilities, she also got to use state-of-the-art technology, making her care even more efficient and precise.
Speaking of Technology…
Thanks to Dr. Jackson’s experience and training, El Reno Family Dentistry was able to purchase the Dentsply Sirona Axeos CBCT scanner. Rather than taking a single flat X-ray image, this machine quickly spins around a patient’s head, captures several images from many angles, and then they are pieced together to form a highly detailed 3D model of the teeth and jaws.
This technology reveals much, much more detail compared to a regular X-ray, and it is extremely helpful when planning more complex restorative procedures like dental implants. Not only does it show the orientation of all of the teeth, but also the current condition of the jawbone (which is vital in determining whether or not someone is a good candidate for implants). The scanner can also help her find problems that concern single teeth or the entire bite that might not be apparent from a regular X-ray, taking her diagnostic capabilities to the next level.
