Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
Children are particularly susceptible to common dental issues like cavities and gum disease because the enamel doesn’t fully harden until age 14, and most are still figuring out how to brush and floss properly. That’s why attending checkups and cleanings is so important from an early age. At these appointments, our team will gently remove plaque and tartar from your child’s teeth, give them an exam, and go over the basics of ongoing oral care so they can start to form healthy habits as soon as possible.
Dental Sealants
If a child is going to develop a cavity, it will most likely be in one of their back teeth. That’s because these are quite tricky for little hands to clean while brushing, plus the natural contours and grooves in the enamel easily trap plaque and bacteria. For some extra protection, we can apply a dental sealant over these teeth to literally shield them and prevent decay. The procedure is fast and painless, and it can easily safeguard a child’s most vulnerable teeth for over a decade.
Fluoride Treatments
Exposure to fluoride at a young age is tremendously beneficial for children, as it not only helps fortify their baby teeth to make them more resistant to cavities, but it also aids in the development of the incoming adult teeth. Many children don’t receive enough day-to-day, but we can make up for this with quick and easy fluoride treatments during their regular checkups. Dr. Jackson or Dr. Parsons can apply a highly concentrated gel to the teeth, and that’s all that’s needed to drastically lower a child’s risk of decay.
Tooth-Colored Fillings
Most children will have a cavity before the age of 12, and if this happens to your little one, don’t worry, we won’t guilt-trip you! Instead, we’ll quickly fix the problem with a tooth-colored filling. Unlike traditional metal fillings, these can be specially shaded to blend with the surrounding tooth, creating a restoration that won’t stick out in your child’s smile. Plus, these fillings require less enamel to be removed during placement compared to older ones, making them a more conservative option.
Athletic Mouthguards
Whether your child is a star athlete or just likes playing the occasional pick-up game with their friends, they should always wear a mouthguard whenever they participate in sports. This will protect their teeth, gums, lips, and jaw from any unexpected (or expected!) impacts. We can provide your child with a strong and comfortable custom-made appliance that will fit better than anything you can buy off the shelf, and it will allow you to breathe a little easier from the sidelines.
Lip & Tongue-Tie Treatment
When a restricted band of tissue behind the upper lip or underneath the tongue keeps your child from being able to eat certain foods, breathe easily, or speak clearly, we can use our in-house dental laser to perform a frenectomy. By releasing what are known as lip- and tongue-ties, we can help your child experience greater oral mobility and function so that they can move through life with fewer issues.
